Play Pokémon Xenoverse on Android

There's no official Android build — here's exactly how to run it with JoiPlay.

Last verified: September 11, 2026

What JoiPlay actually is

JoiPlay is a free, third-party Android app that runs RPG Maker XP/VX/VX Ace, Ren'Py, and similar PC game engines directly on your phone or tablet. It is not a Game Boy Advance emulator — Xenoverse is not a GBA game, so no GBA-related app or file has any role here. JoiPlay doesn't include any games itself; you still need the legitimately obtained Xenoverse game files.

Do not install JoiPlay from the Google Play Store

This matters specifically for Xenoverse: the Google Play Store build of JoiPlay dropped support for MKXP-Z (a specific engine mode) back in 2021, and Xenoverse's newer engine depends on it. Installing JoiPlay from Google Play will very likely fail to run this game correctly. Get JoiPlay and its RPG Maker plugin directly from joiplay.net instead — both are free, no account or payment required.

Requirements

  • Android 5.0 or higher is commonly cited as the practical minimum (not an official published spec) — for a smoother experience with a heavier Essentials-engine game like this one, Android 8.0+ with at least 3GB RAM is a reasonable target.
  • JoiPlay — from joiplay.net, not Google Play.
  • The RPG Maker plugin for JoiPlay — also from joiplay.net. Required specifically because Xenoverse is RPG Maker XP-based (this plugin isn't needed for RPG Maker MV/MZ games).
  • A few hundred MB to a few GB of free internal storage for the game files.

Step 1 — Get JoiPlay and the RPG Maker Plugin

JoiPlay — Official Site

Download the JoiPlay APK and the RPG Maker XP plugin APK directly. Also available via JoiPlay's official Patreon at no cost.

Get both: JoiPlay (core app) + RPG Maker Plugin

Go to joiplay.net ↗

Opens joiplay.net in a new tab. PokemonXenoverse.com does not host game files.

Because these come as direct APKs rather than a Play Store install, you'll need to allow "Install unknown apps" for whichever browser or file manager you download them with — Android will prompt you for this the first time.

Step 2 — Get the Game Files

Get Pokémon Xenoverse from the source on our Download page — the same official source as the Windows version. Extract the archive; you need the full extracted folder, not the compressed file itself. Extract it on a PC and transfer the folder to your device, or extract directly on Android with a file manager that supports archive extraction.

Step 3 — Add the Game in JoiPlay

  1. Open JoiPlay.
  2. Tap the + button and choose "Add Game."
  3. Navigate to the extracted Xenoverse folder and select its Game.exe file.
  4. JoiPlay will index it and add it to your library.

Configuration & Practical Tips

  • If tilesets or graphics look garbled, long-press the game's icon in JoiPlay and choose "Optimize maps."
  • If prompted for the RPG Maker XP RTP (Runtime Package), download it from the official RPG Maker RTP source and select the downloaded file directly — don't extract/unzip it first.
  • If JoiPlay offers to "export" the game content, do it — it's reported to noticeably improve load speed.
  • Keep the game on internal storage, not an SD card — external storage can cause slowdowns and file-access issues.
  • Minor issues (occasional missing sound effects, slightly misplaced text, FPS dips during busy scenes) are common across Essentials-engine games on JoiPlay generally, not unique to Xenoverse.

Controls on Android

JoiPlay overlays on-screen touch controls (a d-pad and action buttons) by default. A Bluetooth or USB controller can be used instead where supported.

Known Issue: Crash on Startup (Zlib::StreamError)

Some older Android versions crash immediately on launch with a Zlib::StreamError on JoiPlay releases newer than v1.11.006. Current JoiPlay versions resolve this automatically on Android 9 and above. If you're on an older Android version and hit this, the documented workaround is to use the older JoiPlay v1.11.006 together with RPG Maker plugin v1.20.05 instead of the latest release.

Other Common Errors

  • Game won't open / crashes immediately: confirm you installed the RPG Maker plugin (not just JoiPlay itself), and that both came from joiplay.net rather than Google Play.
  • Save not found after reinstalling JoiPlay: save files live inside the game folder itself — back up the whole folder, not just the app.

For anything not covered here, see our general Troubleshooting guide, or ask in JoiPlay's own Discord (linked from joiplay.net) with your specific error — its developer is reported to actively help with game-specific compatibility issues.

Chromebook

If your Chromebook supports Android apps via the Google Play Store, the same JoiPlay setup above applies (remember: install JoiPlay's APK directly from joiplay.net, not through the Play Store search). Performance will depend on your specific Chromebook's hardware.
